Women's Studies Conference
Women's Well Being through the Mind, Body, Spirit Connection:
Caring for Ourselves, AIDS, HIV, and STD's
Hosted by: Women Gender Studies

The Conference will focus on providing information of the impact of HIV, AIDS, STDS and other health issues on our lives, and the importance of caring for ourselves through awareness, prevention, and treatment. Many people within the health community contribute to the dynamics of prevention, treatment, and caring of our minds, bodies and spirits. It is important that students, faculty, staff and community members understand the services and efforts provided by the local and national health organizations and individuals. New research and treatments emerge, daily, from medical practitioners, scientists, sociologists, artists and others to make us aware of how our lives are impacted by disease, and how we can be active participators in prevention and care.

The Conference/exhibit begins with an opening ceremony and viewing, on April 4th, of Cordelle’s “Century Project.” Following introductions and opening statements by Cordell, refreshments will be served. The exhibit will be open to students, faculty, staff, and community April 5th-April 7th.

Frank Cordelle has been a photographic artist for over 25 years. As a young person, living through the turbulent years of the Vietnam War and the Civil Rights Movement, he was awakened to the power of images to act as a force for political and social change. So, just shy of earning a PhD in biochemistry from Brandeis University, Mr. Cordelle turned his talent, passion, and life’s work to photography. He worked several years freelancing, and his photographs have appeared in both Life and Newsweek Magazines, as well as, in projects with several Fortune 500 corporations.

In the early 80’s, Frank Cordelle began working on his Century Project. The project is a series of chronological nude photographs of women ranging in age from zero to one hundred years. These are ordinary women from all backgrounds and experiences. Each of the photographs is accompanied by the woman’s personal statement about her reasons for being photographed, her life’s stories, experiences, traumas, and her uncensored feelings about herself and her body. The exhibit is beautiful, powerful and life-altering for everyone who sees it. It has traveled to colleges and universities across the country and has been highly praised without exception. It invites dialogue about a wide range of issues such as body image, self-acceptance, nudity, and issues surrounding sexuality, women’s health, well-being and spirituality. You are certain to be transformed by the Century Project!

This Program is made possible by a grant from the United States Department of Health and Human Resources, Office of Public Health and Services, Office of Women’s Health, Public Health Advisor and Director Mary L Bowers, Houston Community College System, Southeast College, Office of President Fena Garza. Frank Cordelle’s Exhibit, “Century Project,” is made possible by Title V Funding, Director Dr. Juan Carlos Reina.
